The Thermals: Fuckin’ A

The Thermals
Fuckin’ A
(Sub Pop)

After being discovered by Ben Gibbard (The Postal Service, Death Cab for Cutie), this Portland trio signed to Sub Pop and released their debut, More Parts Per Million in 2003. While that album received nods from various respectable critics, The Thermals are truly making their mark with Fuckin’ A. Thirteen full throttle cuts (only one of which clocks in at over three minutes) that fail to show even the slightest sign of restraint. Pounding rhythms, kamikaze guitars and Hutch Harris’ snot-nosed vocals define The Thermals’ sound.

The album’s opener, “Our Trip” might just be the greatest punk anthem I’ve heard in years. Over tasteful feedback, Harris screams, “Stop tripping, we’re not listening” (God, I wish the kids were listening to this instead of Linkin Park or Good Charlotte). The intensity remains throughout this extremely solid (albeit brief – the LP clocks in at 28 minutes) collection. I’m still unable to shake the infectious, “How We Know” and “End To Begin”, but the hits don’t stop there. This is an undeniably complete record and personally, my favorite discovery of 2004.

1) Buy it, 2) pop it in, 3) turn it up, 4) rock out…..Fuckin’ A.
