Set Your Goals: This Will Be the Death of Us

Set Your Goals
This Will Be the Death of Us
(Epitaph)

In what is a sure-fire clinic of pop-punk euphoria, with This Will Be the Death of Us, Set Your Goals simply do what they do best – play raucous, fast and unapologetic punk rock tunes.

This Will Be the Death of Us is an album that could’ve used more gang vocals but it still succeeds in remaining thoroughly anthemic. The dual-vocal aesthetic, one of the better in the genre, consisting of Matt Wilson and Jordan Brown, turns out to be the driving force behind the effort on the whole. Mike Green’s (Paramore, the Matches) production work lends a sheen of accessibility to the record, a step up from the work Barett Jones (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) did on the band’s debut Mutiny!

Set Your Goals had some help along the way on This Will Be the Death of Us, with a number of various artists chipping in. Ex-Movielife/current I Am the Avalanche frontman Vinnie Caruana appears on the album’s opener “This Will Be the Death of Us.” Other appearances include Paramore’s Hayley Williams (“The Few That Remain”), Jon Gula (ex-Turmoil) on (“Gaia Bleeds (Make Way for Man)”), and New Found Glory’s Chad Gilbert on the albums closer (“Our Ethos: A Legacy to Pass On”).

This could turn out to be a gem in the 2009 Epitaph catalog of releases.
