Since her 1979 debut In the Heat of the Night, Pat Benatar has been rocking the mainstream with her hard driving pop rock and refined singing. Hit songs came early, and then came often, as she released seven records during the 1980s to become one of music’s most popular performers.
With her tough-as-nails attitude, the Brooklyn singer teamed up with guitarist, and later to be husband, Neil Geraldo to write some of the decade’s most memorable rock songs, along with ballads.
Originally released in 2005, this Benatar Greatest Hits collection is remasted with 20 of her classics. From the opening track – her first big hit “Heartbreaker” from her debut album – this is a non-stop hit parade.
Thanks in part to the invention of music television, in the early ’80s, Benatar sky rocketed into popularity, winning several Grammy Awards during that era.
Radio mainstaples “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” “Treat Me Right,” and “You Better Run,” are all from her platinum-selling sophomore record Crimes of Passion. They still retain their musical glory, sounding better than ever.
Other notable ’80s hits on this collection include “Fire & Ice,” “Promises in the Dark,” “Shadows of the Night,” “Love Is a Battlefield,” “We Belong,” and “Invincible.”
As the decade ended, so did Benatar’s hits, mainly because she tried to expand her music beyond the arena rock. In 1991, she released a blues album True Love, and later on, she put out 1997’s acoustic-based album Innamorata.
Although Pat Benatar hasn’t released a new record in seven years, she continues to tour, playing her hits alongside other classic rock bands. On an episode of CMT’s “Crossroads,” she shared the stage with Martina McBride and told the cameras she was perfectly happy with what she was doing musically because that is what the fans want. You can’t blame her for that.
Pat Benatar’s Greatest Hits re-release is a solid collection of a groundbreaking singer that you will return to again and again. You may not know all the hits, but the diversity of these songs will truly show you what a talent Benatar is.
