Lissie Maurus aka Lissie is a Rock Island, Illinois-native who draws on her Midwestern blue collar ethics for her indie rock sound. A rebel at heart, Lissie came on to the scene in 2007 with a self-titled EP but didn’t gain national recognition until she signed with legendary label Fat Possum and released Why You Runnin’ in 2009/
Hot on the heels of her 2010 release Catching a Tiger, this blonde bombshell singer guitarist releases a five-song EP of cover songs titled Covered Up With Flowers.
The album opens with a rocking live version of the Kid Cudi song “Pursuit of Happiness” then flows seamlessly into an extended jam of the Lady GagGa hit single “Bad Romance.” If covering GaGa wasn’t obscure enough, Lissie channels her country/folk/pop crossover side expertly by covering “Games People Play” by Joe South. For diehard fans, Lissie adds a studio version of one of her live main staples – Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters,” which sounds like it was written for her dusky voice.
Though the EP ends on a somber note with a cover of Nick Cave’s “The Ship Song,” Covered Up with Flowers is a release which shows a different side to Lissie and sure to be a good find for her fans.
