Brooklyn-based Big Crown Records opened its doors a year ago and was founded by producer and multi-instrumentalist Leon Michels (El Michels Affair, The Arcs, Chicano Batman) and DJ Danny Akalepse. In celebration of their first year, Big Crown kicked off a monthly vinyl release series, which will culminate in a compilation album to be issued later this year.
Elmer “Lee” Fields has been playing R&B and soul music for the better part of 40 years. Nicknamed “Little JB” for his physical and vocal resemblance to James Brown, Fields laid down his first single in 1969 and continues to release albums and tour today. In 2010, Fields and his backing band, The Expressions, released the album ‘Special Night.’ The album was recorded in three weeks direct to analog tape and gave us the singles “Lover Man” and “Never Be Another You.” These singles are now being reissued on a 45 as part of the Big Crown vinyl series.
On the A-side you get the sweet groove of “Lover Man” with its heavy bass line and shiny horns. The drums hold the groove as Fields belts out his love for a woman he wants to have. He is practically down on his knees begging the woman, showing just how true his love could be. Pure soul classic style. B-side “Never Be Another You” continues Fields’ soul style of funk and pop. This track is a bit longer and more playful than its predecessor, but still has Fields telling the lady what he can do for her all in the name of love.
Lee Fields continues the soul traditions set by Brown, Redding, and Cooke, making him a modern day lover man.
