Innocent Words Video Premiere: The Dollyrots Cover Katrina & the Waves’ “Walking On Sunshine” Off ‘Whiplash Splash’ Out Now

Punk-pop sweethearts the Dollyrots released their sixth studio album ‘Whiplash Splash’ in late March and hit Billboard’s Heatseekers and Top Independent Albums first week out. ‘Whiplash Splash’ is available on CD, limited-edition aqua-blue vinyl, and digitally on the band’s very own Arrested Youth Label with distribution via MVD Entertainment Group. The Dollyrots’ spirit and signature sound shines through on the completely fan-funded new album, with production by the band and longtime producer John Fields.

The band’s 2016 live album/DVD ‘Family Vacation: Live in Los Angeles’ debuted at #15 on Billboard’s Heatseekers album chart and their previous studio album, ‘Barefoot And Pregnant’ garnered Dollyrots first chart appearance peaking at #7 on Billboard’s Heatseekers. Both chart appearances were preceded by highly successful crowdsourcing campaigns through PledgeMusic. This followed the group’s 2012’s self-titled LP, two albums on Joan Jett’s Blackheart Records, and a 2004 debut through the venerable Lookout!/Panic Button Records.

Along with their sugary-sweet albums and high-energy live shows, the Dollyrots are known for their explosive cover versions. In the past, the Dollyrots have covered “Be My Baby” (The Ronettes); “There’s A Barbarian in the Back Of My Car” (Voice of the Beehive); “Bad Reputation” (Joan Jett); “Punk Rock Girls” (the Queers); “Let’s Turkey Trot” (Little Eva); “Dream Lover” (Bobby Darin); “Happy Together” (the Turtles); and “Brand New Key” (Melanie). For ‘Whiplash Splash,’ bassist and lead singer Ogden and guitarist Luis Cabezas pay homage to Katrina and the Waves covering their 1985 hit “Walking on Sunshine.”

“We sent out a text to our friends and asked them what song we should cover this time around and two friends, who we greatly respect – Jaret Reddick of Bowling for Soup and Drew Carey (I swear I am not name dropping) – both suggested “Walking on Sunshine” and that’s all we needed.” Cabezas said of the decision to cover the 80s classic. “We finished the record in Minneapolis then flew back home and Kelly was like two weeks away from her due date, we recorded the cover song at home, sent it to Fields and that was it.”
