TEN: Starting in 2013, each Friday, Innocent Words started shining the spotlight directly on up and coming artists/bands with 10 questions we like to call IW10.
Baltimore, Maryland. The original Windy City. The original, despite what some may say, Big Apple.
Members and Instruments:
Sean plays drums, sings, records everything. Suica plays the keyboard and the violin. Nick plays bass and a bunch of tiny keyboards. John plays guitar. Kinsey plays guitar and sings.
Short Bio (in your own words):
I met Sean when I left my guitar at a show and he found it. When I picked it up, we briefly discussed playing music together, I was nervous about it so I brought Suica with me. We started playing together, in our earliest form, around 2010-2011 and have not yet found a good enough reason to stop. Nick joined up before “Bored Crusader”, as did our old guitarist and friend Dan Windsor, John came on in the middle of “Full Flower” and here we are.
What was the first live concert you ever went to?
Britney Spears at Merriweather Post Pavilion.
What is your funniest or worst tour experience?
There was this time where we got a flat tire outside of Florida. We pulled into a rest stop and this intimidating, southern-by-the-grace-of-god type man came up. I thought he was going to kick my ass (which is how that would normally go where I’m from). Instead, he helped us find our spare tire since we rented the van, put it on for us, and made sure that we were all set to go.
As that was happening, these two ladies drove by, asked what was up. We explained that we played in a band and that we were on a lil tour. “Oh, like the Black Keys?” I hadn’t heard them yet, but I said yes anyway. They said we looked like we were having a bad day and gave us money to get lunch, we gave them some CDs and shirts. Angels from above, I swear.
So that whole thing is probably the best, worst, and funniest tour experience all in one.
What THREE things are a must have when you go on tour or play a show?
Guitars, our van, a positive attitude towards the world.
What was the first record you ever purchased?
Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller.’
If you had to record an EP of covers, which FIVE songs/artist would make the cut?
Broadcast – “Come On Let’s Go”
Sparklehorse – “Don’t Take My Sunshine Away”
Stereolab – “The Black Arts”
Nina Gala – “Bare Bones”
No Doubt – “Simple Kind of Life”
What’s your preferred music format – vinyl, CD, digital, cassette – and why?
Probably digital. As much as I may love records and having this beautiful thing I can read and cherish in front of me, I can’t play them in my car. That said, please buy our record.
And yes, hell yes. Videos for days. Here is our new video for “Full Flower” – www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlhSKuYjOsg&t=28s. Also, by the time this comes out, our video for “Kno” will be out over at GoldFlakePaint. Shout out GoldFlakePaint.
