Innocent Words Presents IW10 with Jonathan Smith of Vassals

TEN: Starting in 2013, each Friday, Innocent Words started shining the spotlight directly on up and coming artists/bands with 10 questions we like to call IW10.

Brooklyn, NY

Members and Instruments:
Shay Spence: bass, vocals
Jeff Fettig: guitar
Jonathan Smith: drums

Short Bio (in your own words):
Vassals is a band that embraces the loud/quiet dichotomy of the 90s through the lense of 60s rock and psychedelia.

What was the first live concert you ever went to?
Jon: Bush with Veruca Salt at Boston Garden
Jeff: Green Day, Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World at Shoreline Amphitheater.
Shay: Pretty sure it was that same Green Day, Jimmy tour

What is your funniest or worst tour experience?
We haven’t done a lot of touring but one time we played a VFW hall basement in Boston and it had weird kid’s afternoon program art hanging everywhere plus an old curmudgeon-y bartender full of “stories” from his past.

What THREE things are a must have when you go on tour or play a show?
Toothbrush, Advil, Headphones

What was the first record you ever purchased?
Jon: Smahing Pumpkins ‘Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness’ or Green Day ‘Dookie’ can’t remember.
Jeff: Will Smith ‘Big Willie Style’

If you had to record an EP of covers, which FIVE songs/artist would make the cut?
The Beatles (we’ve covered “Yer Blues”); Black Sabbath Deerhunter (particularly “Nothing Ever Happened”); Death From Above 1979; Spoon

What’s your preferred music format – vinyl, CD, digital, cassette – and why?
Vinyl. Something about the process of choosing a record and putting it on the player, dropping the needle, holding the jacket in your hands and checking out the large format album art, the credits, etc. No other medium really has that. Not to mention the sound quality being truly lossless (sort-of, it depends really) and the “warmth” that comes from the constraints of the medium. It’s the full package!

What is your website and do you have a music video to share?
