TEN: Starting in 2013, each Friday, Innocent Words started shining the spotlight directly on up and coming artists/bands with 10 questions we like to call IW10.

Dayton Ohio

Instruments you play:
Guitar, Mandolin

Short Bio (in your own words):
I grew up in a home full of all kinds of music, by artists like James Taylor, Elton John, Neil Diamond and Neil Young and in many ways, it shaped me. I started playing guitar in my early teens and started writing in a journal and eventually those words morphed into song lyrics. Many of the songs I’ve written and recorded are autobiographical and some are just from experiences we’ve all had through life. Hopefully my songs can be a breeze that blows back the curtain and gives one a glimpse into a window in time or an experience in life. It’s all about love, loss, heartbreak, rebirth and renewal.

I played in bands and then did what society said I should do and took a corporate job. Slowly but surely, I played less and less until I finally put down my guitar for good. My music was my meditation, it’s what kept me balanced in life. I lost my balance and times grew dark. So, I took a leap of faith and I decided to move from New York to the west coast for a fresh start. I picked up the guitar again and started playing, writing and recording.

My upcoming EP, out on March 10, is comprised of selections from my forthcoming album Felt, which will be out this summer. The songs were produced by Robert L. Smith (Defy Recordings), the album will also feature the talents of guitarist Robert Saltzman (Paul Simon), drummer Joe Bonadio (Sting), bassist Malcolm Gold and vocalist Clara Lofaro.

What was the first live concert you ever went to?
The Guess Who in some dingy bar in Ohio in high school

What is your funniest or worst tour experience?
At the Oriental Theater in Denver a few weeks back. it was 1 degrees outside and a foot of snow on the ground. The heater was busted at the theater. Everyone came early and had to wait outside for far too long, then when they let them in it was still cold. They were ornery. The booker came out and told us she was not going to introduce us because everyone was cold and pissed and she didn’t want to step out on stage with a target on her back. She said good luck and walked away. lol. turned out to be one of our best gigs of the tour.

What THREE things are a must have when you go on tour or play a show?
1.My band mates – it’s boring without them
2. ear plugs cause my bandmates snore
3. my guitar Gibson J-40 my dear friend found at a gun and guitar show in the middle of know where

What was the first record you ever purchased?
AC/DC ‘Back in Black’ or was it ‘Private Eyes’ by Hall and Oates. I can’t remember.

If you had to record an EP of covers, which FIVE songs/artists would make the cut?
Mason Jennings “Jackson Square”
Oasis “Wonderwall”
John Prine “That’s the Way the World Goes Round”
Gun’s and Roses – Patience
Blitzen Trapper “Furr”

What’s your preferred music format – vinyl, CD, digital, cassette – and why?
I still buy and listen to music on itunes, but my preferred is cd’s. I usually buy cd’s at live concerts then they sit in my car and I get to take in the entire album while I drive around.

Please give us a rundown of what we can expect from you this year:
On tour with David Bromberg, playing in many iconic venues up and down the west and east coast. Release of my first full length album. I also may release another EP by year end, more recording in the studio, booking a few festivals, releasing music videos, writing new songs, meeting new people, surfing and spending time with my family.
