Sometimes things seem better on paper than they truly are. Case in point, when I heard Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi were reuniting on a project I was stoked. When they released a 2-song EP in the spring of 2012 I was encouraged. Both songs showed a promise and commitment to reignite the metal scene. When I heard a full length was in the offing I was happy.
The package has been released and it’s mildly noteworthy. The two songs which caught my attention months ago are here (“Out of My Mind” and “Holy Water”) … and I still maintain that Gillan has a killer vocal range and style. However, the rest of the tracks on this 2-CD set are filler … pulling from unreleased cuts from various and obscure bands/projects that both Iommi and Gillan participated in over the years … some are good, some are merely interesting, some should have remained unreleased.
On a positive note, the WhoCares project benefits the people of Armenia. Gillan and Iommi have a long history of helping these folks, contributing to the building of a music school and providing instruments. They remain committed to the vision of helping children in under privileged and war torn countries discover music. That said; this is a great package and everyone should pick one up.
