This CD/DVD set gives fans a closer view at one of the best touring live acts. The DVD covers the band’s history, how they all met and got together, including the days when people told them that “bar bands don’t sell albums.” However, it also covers more personal histories of each member of the band, including a touching portrait of lead singer Dave King’s relationship with his mother as related through music growing up in Ireland.
Of course, there are also videos of the live performances which helped Flogging Molly get the following they have today along with how some fans got into the band.
The CD doesn’t really cover any new territory, but is more of an accompaniment for the DVD instead of the other way around. However, it is definitely worth listening to for the various acoustic and live versions of songs like “Drunken Lullabies” and “Within a Mile of Home,” a song which King had written for his mother after a long stint of touring and not seeing her. Despite covering a lot of down periods, the DVD is a rather uplifting story which is all the more enjoyable due to its veracity. It may not be the same as seeing them live, but it’s good enough to tie over a fan until the next show comes to town.
