Statements From X On the Passing Of Ray Manzarek

(Los Angeles) It is with sad and heavy hearts that the members of the seminal punk rock band, X, pay tribute to their friend and mentor, Ray Manzarek.

Ray Manzarek is an integral part of X’s history. The band’s debut album, Los Angeles was released on April 26, 1980 and produced by Ray. The album includes a cover of the 1967 Doors song “Soul Kitchen” and was the bands most successful release. It ranked # 16 for the year in The Village Voice Pazz & Jop Critics Poll. Subsequently in 1989, it was ranked number 24 on Rolling Stone’s list of 100 best albums of the 80s and Pitchfork ranked it 91st on their top 100 albums of the 1980s. The title track is included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and again in 2003, the album was ranked number 286 on the Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Ray went on to produce the next three studio albums for the band, Wild Gift in 1981 (also on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 greatest albums of all time at #334), Under the Big Black Sun in 1982 and 1983’s More Fun in the New World.

In late 2010, X celebrated the 30th Anniversary of Los Angeles by playing the entire album, start to finish. Ray joined the band during their two shows in San Francisco, just after Christmas. In August of 2012, Ray again joined the band for the entire show at the famed Roxy Theatre during the Sunset Strip Music Festival, playing Los Angeles in its entirety. In 2013, Rhino released The Doors/X Side by Side: Soul Kitchen, a split white vinyl 7″.

Ray led by example, from the doors to carmine burana and beyond. He is and will always be a spirit being, adept at expanding perception. And once those doors of perception are opened, they never close. He taught me that we are the keys, that we can unlock all doors, everywhere, to create magic, to transform ourselves and power the world, through joy and love and imagination and art and, above all through music. – Exene

If Bob Dylan brought poetry & folk to popular music; Ray & the Doors brought the blues & poetry to rock music. The Doors are rock royalty. Nate Currin Releases New Single “A Beautiful House,” Duet Ft. Callie Cryar Of The Vespers

(Gainesville, GA) – Archaic Cannon Records today released “A Beautiful House,” the first single from Nate Currin’s sophomore full-length album The Pilgrim, due out August 6th. The single is a duet featuring Callie Cryar of Nashville-based Americana/folk band The Vespers. “‘A Beautiful House’ is about community and friendship,” says Currin. “That special bond between people is the beautiful house that sits on the top of a hill.”

The Pilgrim is an 18-song concept album centered around one of the most significant works of English literature, The Pilgrim’s Progress. The book was written in 1678 by English writer and preacher John Bunyan from his jail cell in England, and tells the story of a man who makes the journey from this world to a celestial kingdom. “In The Pilgrim’s Progress the beautiful house is the community that prepares the pilgrim for his next battle and the trials and tribulations he faces,” adds Currin.

Nate Currin’s forthcoming project The Pilgrim is an album unlike anything he’s ever put out into the world, and far from most on the singer/songwriter, folk and pop rock charts. Although it’s based on a religious work, The Pilgrim is not intended as a Christian album. Rather, it is Currin’s lyrical and musical interpretation of A Pilgrim’s Progress, a piece of literature that has been translated into more than 200 languages and referenced by many influential authors including Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, E.E. Cummings, Louisa May Alcott and C.S. Lewis. The Pilgrim was recorded at Domus Sound in Athens, GA, co-produced by Currin and Emmy-nominated producer Simon Illa and mastered by TW Walsh, former member of Pedro the Lion.

Over the years, Atlanta-raised and now San Francisco-based Nate Currin has traveled to over 20 countries, toured with notable acts like Blues Traveler and Neon Trees, been featured on MTV and received a first ballot Grammy nomination. This summer his trio will embark on a 60-date tour throughout the U.S. in support of The Pilgrim, beginning on June 7th in Atlanta, GA at Vinyl. Additional tour dates listed below.

The Trophy Fire Share ‘In Your Mind’ New Album ‘Directions for Daylight’ Released Today

New Noise Magazine has the world online premiere of The Trophy Fire’s new song, “In Your Mind.” Showcasing the group’s penchant for driving and emotional melodies, the song fits The Trophy Fire’s passion for ‘90s alt rock and synth-pop of the ‘80s. “In Your Mind” will appear on the San Francisco trio’s new album, Directions For Daylight, which drops today via Greyday Records (I Was Totally Destroying It, The Heligoats).

When speaking with New Noise Magazine, The Trophy Fire’s Ben Flanagan (vocals/guitar/keys) explains that the song is about “having a history with someone, having them leave and about all of the time spent wondering if they are as consumed with the past as you are. It’s about the nostalgia and how much meaning we place on something that no longer exists.” Looking back is a lyrical subject that recurs throughout Directions Of Daylight, including the track “Hey Dreamer,” which recently received an online premiere from MTV Buzzworthy.

Rounded out by siblings John Schuman (drums/vocals) and Adam Schuman (guitar/vocals), The Trophy Fire is comprised of seasoned musicians, with Flanagan having played in The Actual (signed to Scott Weiland’s Softdrive Records) and serving as a touring member of Dredg. Directions For Daylight will be the group’s fourth release, which includes full-lengths A Lifetime In The Middle Of The Ocean (2010), Modern Hearts (2011) and the EP Armor EP. Priding themselves on being a full-on rock act on stage, The Trophy Fire has captured a wide audience during multiple national tours with such diverse acts as Far, The Dear Hunter, I Was Totally Destroying It, Fair To Midland, Balance And Composure and Ozma. Last year’s BFD Fest in Northern California also saw the group share the stage with such notable acts as Jane’s Addiction and Silversun Pickups.

A music video for the album’s next single, “Spinning,” will be premiering online shortly. Meanwhile, The Trophy Fire will be kicking off a North American summer tour with a special hometown show in San Francisco on May 31st. Sub Pop Releases The Baptist Generals ‘Jackleg Devotional to the Heart’ Today

Out today via Sub Pop records are the anticipated releases of The Baptist Generals’ Jackleg Devotional to the Heart and 7” release of Carl by Minneapolis punk band, Condominium. Read on for more information on both releases.

The Baptist Generals:
A few weeks ago we shared a video for the song “Fly Candy Harvest,” which track appears on a limited-edition pre-order flexi-disc available with purchase of Jackleg Devotional to the Heart from Subpop.com as was directed by The Baptist Generals’ own Jason Reimer. Seattle singer songwriter Barbara Ireland sings her original rock song, ‘Black Sound,’ from her album RED (2012). The lyrics are about codependency and the sadness and difficulty that comes from being in a relationship with an alcoholic boyfriend who also suffers from the ‘Black Dog’ of depression. The music video features mud, trains, and kaleidoscopes as metaphors for the heavy feeling of being depressed.

Barbara Ireland is a female singer songwriter from Seattle.

Crocodiles Announce New LP, Premiere “Cockroach” Track

For me, Crocodiles represent everything I love about life-affirming Rock’n'Roll: they bring light out of darkness; they match reckless noise with the most beautiful melodies; they catch you off guard whilst sounding like the most perfect kind of right for the right here, right now.

They remind me of all the things I’ve loved but they also make me hungry for what I’ve not yet tasted. The claustrophobia and pain of the recent past is dealt with bravely and the road ahead is wide and open. It is all my favorite records playing at once; the trick to it being the truth; the truth being that great, life-affirming music must be bittersweet; anger is an energy that can be churned to positive.

We who face the demons of derailment out to destroy dreams must harness the hate and turn it back on itself — it is from this that great art is begat. And so these songs rage and chime at once, in organized chaos, like life.

Charles and Brandon have been making music together since they were 18. The y met in the dirty glow of San Diego sun and now split their lives between New York City and London. Their music has grown up over the last decade just as they have. New blood in the form of producer Sune Rose Wagner of Raveonettes fame oversaw this recent endeavor and it was a quick, natural Los Angeles creation. Duncan Mills mixed for the third time, to maintain their catalogue lifeline.

Crimes Of Passion kicks off with “I Like It In The Dark,” which could be their best to date; a joyous hymn to atheism and closes with the aching beauty of “Un Chant D’Amour,” a simple and direct ode to heartbreak. These songs bookmark an album bursting with sounds inspired by the likes of the Soft Boys, Street Hassle era Lou Reed, the Notorious Byrd Brothers, the Jackson 5 and even Glenn Branca. This is certainly the most fully realised Crocodiles album to date.

It is a sadly accepted impression that life is cooler in song, on screen, in art, or in poetry, but it is far superior when the creative process is fed back into real life and an album like Crimes Of Passion is born.

May 21, 2013 – The Winery Dogs (@TheWineryDogs), the power trio featuring rock veterans Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold), Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big) and Richie Kotzen (Mr. Big, Poison), have signed with Loud & Proud Records. The Winery Dogs’ self-titled debut album will be released in North America on July 23. THE WINERY DOGS was self-produced and mixed by Jay Ruston (Anthrax, Stone Sour, Steel Panther). It features a classic rock/power trio sound which seamlessly melds the immense talents of the three veteran rockers.

The band has already released two videos from the new album, “Elevate” and “Desire,” the latter of which recently premiered on Ulitmateclassicrock.com. Both videos can now be seen on their official YouTube page.

Of The Winery Dogs’ signing, Mike Portnoy commented, “I am so excited about The Winery Dogs and am proud and honored to be working with two of the greatest musicians on the planet! Mike Portnoy is one of the founding members of Dream Theater, with whom he played drums for 25 years, selling more than 10 million copies worldwide.
