Look, I know you’re not supposed to judge an album on lyrics alone – I get that, I do. But, can someone please tell me how am I supposed to take lyrics like “if we were fed poison through our bellybutton” seriously?
It’s evident that Extra Arms takes their music with an extra dose of ostentation that borders on annoying. And, while it’s true enough that the music is lovely – each song seems well thought out and layered with care – perhaps that’s where they spent most of their energy, and why the rest of their music is sadly lacking.
Still, penning weird, over the top lyrics for the sake of sounding “enlightened” (or whatever it was that the goal had been) is a really fast way to alienate listeners. Or in my case, turn them off completely.
