Essence is a sixth-generation San Franciscan who was raised by flower children from the Haight-Ashbury Summer of Love era, and yes Essence is her real birth name.
The singer/songwriter has been immersed in music since she was a child. To date, Essence has made four albums, and has shared the stage with such rock & roll luminaries as Jason Mraz, Tom Petty, Chrissie Hynde, Natalie Merchant, Shawn Colvin and Sarah McLachlan.
On her latest album ‘Black Wings,’ Essence blends strong grooves, driving harmonies and melt your heart melodies with her sweet vocal style. She clearly draws from a deep well of emotional insight and melodic craft. The blossoming singer has a knack for balancing darkness and light while exposing her personal relationship with unyielding lyrical truth. Essence is both earthy, sophisticated and honest to the point where you want to give her a hug and thank her for being such a badass.
Her recent backstory has been traumatic, ‘Black Wings’ chronicles the trials and tribulations of a failed marriage propelled by dishonesty and addiction. With the raw and soulful songwriting, Essence delivers an outlaw Americana sound while exposing her soul in a dozen relatable songs.
