Originally only available as part of the deluxe edition of his 2009 album Noble Beast, Andrew Bird’s Useless Creatures has just been released as a separate disc.
The nine-track instrumental effort is pretty much what you have come to expect from the talented multi-instrumentalist, though a bit more upbeat than Noble Beast. The water color on the album cover of beetle and dragonfly looking out in a field of grass and mushroom captures the mood of the disc quite well. Songs like “Master Sigh” and theupbeat “Nyatiti” could be the anthems of spring. The mood drops a bit with the somber “Barn Tapes,” but catches back up with the eclectic “Spinney”.
Joining the Chicago-based Bird on the record are Wilco’s Glenn Kotche on percussion and Todd Sickafoose on double bass.
